What is colour correction?
Colour Correction is the process of using filters, colour gels or post-production computer programs to change the colour of the light in a film. Colour management is also used during the process of filming.
Colour can be used to direct an audience’s attention to the action in a subconscious way.
Oranges, browns and yellows can convey instability or danger, while colours like blue can convey a cold and unsettling feeling that is commonly used for horror movies. In The Matrix, for example, scenes within the Matrix used a green filter, while scenes outside of the Matrix used a blue filter to convey two very different atmospheres in the film.
Colour correction is used in the majority of Hollywood films to create a setting, mood or feeling.
If you’re making your own film, you can use colour correction techniques in post-production or editing software to convey the right mood, setting or “feel” you’re looking for.
