I began my Co-op program at Azure 6 months ago in December of 2015. My time here has helped to confirm my interest in the video industry. I learned a lot about different equipment, programs to edit with, and ways to improve my work. Above all I learned the importance of being resourceful, diligent, and personable. Although I may not have all these traits, this is a goal for me to strive for. When I had arrived at Azure I thought that I knew a lot about how to shoot videos, only to realize that there is a lot more going on behind the scenes than I realized. I was fortunate to have Caine take me on shoots, to learn more about how things are set up and to teach me about what to look for when composing a shot. During those shoots I learned about working with clients and working efficiently and productively. While filming on …

On April 16, 2016 I competed in the Ontario Technical Skills Competition Qualifiers. 16 teams that had also won their regional competitions then gathered at Humber college to compete. The goal was to create a 30 second PSA about how to reduce your carbon footprint. Unfortunately, my partner and I did not place so we could not move on. While editing our PSA I noticed that we had made some mistakes when we were shooting, and due to time constraints were unable to go back and re-shoot the scenes. I noticed that there were some out of focus shots, and some cuts we were planning to do ended up being awkward and out of place. These mistakes may have cost us the competition. I was upset with the mistakes, but I was even more upset that I was responsible for the out of focus shots, and awkward cuts. I hadn’t thought out …

With the increasing concern everyone should be doing everything in their power to protect the environment. As filmmakers there are plenty of things you can do when shooting on set or editing at home. No matter what scene you’re shooting you will most likely be using artificial lighting. Leaving the lights on throughout the entire shoot is bad for the environment and the lights. Turn the lights off when they are not in use. This will help save energy as well as increase the life span of your bulbs. Another thing you can do to save energy is to try and incorporate as much natural lighting into your scenes as possible. This is already a popular option in many Hollywood films like The Revenant for environmental and aesthetic reasons. Most shoots can take several hours. If so, there is bound to be garbage or waste produced. Keeping a recycling bin and compost around …

Filming Under Stressful Conditions
March 26, 2016 in Recent News, Video Production | Comments Off on Filming Under Stressful Conditions
On March 10th the TDSB had their annual skills challenge. This year, the challenge was to create a 30-second PSA. The judges gave us the topic a week before the actual competition. The topic was “How does respect enhance soft skills?”. If you aren’t familiar with what soft skills are here’s the definition. At first my partner and I were stumped and had no idea what to do with the topic. Eventually, we came up with the idea of a boy in an abusive relationship and that you need to respect yourself enough to remove any negative influences in your life. By doing that the world around you will open up to positive opportunities. We were only allowed a certain amount of equipment to use, a camera, 1 tripod with no dolly or sliders, no artificial lighting, and only 1 wired microphone. In addition to that no altering of the clips …
