With the Academy Awards less than a month away here is a quick (and subjective) guide to who will win, and who should win come February 22nd. Best Picture Will Win: Birdman’s upset win at the PGA and SAG awards will likely act as a precursor to Oscars glory. Although not the strongest film of the 8, it is a stronger film than the other front runner, Boyhood. Should Win: Whiplash is the most affecting film in the group; Chazelle’s innovation and energy leap off the screen. It will one day be considered the first of a true auteur’s feature films, but unfortunately that type of pragmatism won’t win it top honors come Oscar night. Honorable mention goes to The Grand Budapest Hotel for being the most fun you could have at the movies this year. Best Director Will Win: Richard Linklater. Oscar season is upon us once again, with another batch of phenomenal films nominated for Best Picture. The Oscars are this coming Sunday, and will be the 86th Academy Awards ceremony. The 85th Academy Awards recently took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and the event had many film lovers racing to finish watching the nominated films before the big night. This will be the Academy Awards ceremony. Interestingly enough, as of this awards ceremony the Academy Awards are now officially branded as “The Oscars” and no longer called the “Academy Awards” in an official capacity. The Oscars continued their new tradition of having a selection of more Best Picture nominees. This year there were nine, while the previous limit of five nominees set in 1945 was replaced with a limit of 10 nominees in 2010. The nine nominees for Best Picture were: Amour Life of Pi Argo Lincoln Beasts of the Southern Wild Silver Linings Playbook Django Unchained Zero Dark Thirty Les Miserables Argo won the Oscar for Best Picture.
