Every summer Toronto is home to numerous outdoor screenings. Many run weekly all summer, and with so many spots the schedule can be a little overwhelming. Here are the 5 screenings we’re most excited for!
Thursday June 30, 8 pm – Kinky Boots (with free drag performance)
St. James Park
I have yet to see this British crowd pleaser. But, given the wild success of the Cyndi Lauper adapted musical, and the promise of a free drag show, you can bet I’ll be here! Side note: my middle age parents in London, Ontario loved this movie when it came out…so maybe free drag show for the whole family?
Wednesday July 13, 8:30 pm – A Little Princess
Harbourfront Centre
Are they showing the movie on VHS or…? Any chance to see this heart breaking/warming flick from every millennial woman’s childhood is not to be passed up. Just that crazy attic room with breakfast and Indian decorating gives us some new Instagram ideas. If you missed this film in the 90s do yourself a favour, come watch it.
Tuesday July 19, sundown – Monty Python and the Holy Grail & The Jerk
Yonge and Dundas
Either one of these comedy classics would merit putting up with Yonge and Dundas square for a few hours, but both in a night? Make sure you bring a puffer as you may be wheezing by night’s end. The first is possibly Python’s most well known work, and is a must see for any cinephile or comedy lover. The Jerk was Steve Martin’s first major film and was an inspired showcase for his brand of lunacy.
Sunday July 31, sundown – Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet
Christie Pits Film Festival
Is this the best modern Shakespeare adaptation of all time? Full stop, one of the best films of all time? This gal says yes, but see for yourself. The colours, the editing, and young Leo all on the big screen in the warm summer air with some white wine, how can you go wrong? If you’re stuck in the city for Civic Holiday long weekend the least you could do is go check out this gorgeous film with a killer soundtrack before you head to whatever party you’re off to.
Wednesday August 24, 9 pm – Purple Rain
Regent Park Film Festival
This was Prince’s first foray into filmmaking and it deserves a watch on the big screen. What could be better than listening to some of his best songs on one of the last nights of summer. Make sure to bring a blanket and something yummy to sip and snack on.
