What is a frame size?
A frame size is the measurement of a frame of video, and video frame sizes are measured in pixels. Pixels are not always square, and frame sizes can be different widths if the pixels are square or not square.
Video can be recorded in different frame sizes. For example, video can be recorded in frame sizes of 720×480, 1920×1080, 1440×1080 or more. These numbers represent the number of pixels high x the number of pixels wide a frame is.
What is aspect ratio?
An aspect ratio is the ratio of the width of a frame to the height of the frame. For example, standard screens have an aspect ratio of 4:3, while high definition has more length-wise picture area and have an aspect ratio of 16:9.
Almost all television programs and movies are in widescreen (16:9) or fullscreen (4:3) format, although there is also the 2:35:1 frame size that is similar to 16:9 (widescreen) .
Choosing a frame size when recording video
The frame size of a recorded video, as well as the frame rate (number of frames per second) can have a significant impact on the end quality of the video but also the size of the video if the video is posted online.
When producing or recording video, it’s always a good idea to consider your end user or audience to make sure that the final product caters to their needs effectively.
