Making a short film for a school project seems like it could be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. You just need to be prepared.

What kind of equipment will I need to make a short film?

You won’t need as much equipment as you think you will if you are just making a short film for a school project. The process will go much more smoothly if you have everything you need in advance!

You will need:

A whiteboard, chalkboard or butcher’s paper to serve as a surface to block out scenes and visualize the film before filming begins – before you erase what’s on the board, make sure you photograph it so everything is documented and you don’t have to worry about keeping track of ideas.

A home base – someone’s house or any kind of space where you can meet, block out scenes and store equipment.

A video camera.

An external microphone – this is optional and not absolutely necessary, but is recommended for the best sound.

A computer and editing software.

A tripod.

Your team

Now that you’ve got the equipment nailed down, you need to make sure you and your team are on the same page. Group projects can be tricky, so it’s important to be communicative through the whole process.

Establish regular meetings and get to know each other. You can also lay down some ground rules like treating the camera with respect at all times, etc. In addition, you need to determine everyone’s jobs and responsibilities so everything is handled.

Teamwork is an essential part of the filmmaking process, even if it is a short film for a school project. Get to know each other for the best results during this creative and collaborative process.
