Film Festival Tips & Tricks You Need to Know!

Hot Docs starts in a couple weeks and TIFF will be here soon enough. I was staff at TIFF and am back volunteering at Hot Docs. Here are some of my inside tips and tricks for navigating a film festival.

See the weird films, anything with or by a big name will be in the theatres in a few months anyway. It’s better to see the films you may not have a chance to see again. Additionally, if you’re planning on rushing a film, these are the best ones to do because they generally attract a smaller audience so your chances of getting a ticket are higher.

Volunteer! Volunteers at TIFF and Hot Docs get vouchers to see films at the festival, usually those tickets are good for any film you want to see, just plan ahead because some films will fill up fast. If you have any questions volunteers are also the best place to start. They usually have the most up to date info for that venue, might have a full festival schedule on them, and are easier to catch than anyone in a headset.

See multiple films in a day, no shame in binge watching at a festival! The real cinephiles sometimes see 4 or 5 films in a day. That said, plan your venues carefully. If you only have half an hour between ticket times make sure that they are at venues that you can realistically get to in that time span.

Be prepared! Anything can happen when you’re lining up for hours outside, a sweater and rain gear can make that a much nicer process. Similarly, a lot of the theatres can be chilly or too warm once they’re full so dress in layers. Also, try to refrain from smoking right before going into a film or wearing heavy perfume. The poor stranger sitting next to you will be grateful. Do wear deodorant though, lots of deodorant.

Keep yourself well fed, hydrated and caffeinated. Dozing during a 10 pm Guy Maddin screening is inevitable without coffee, and I really like his films.
