One of the major problems with VHS, or video tapes, is that they degrade over time. Not only that, but they wear out with frequent use. If your child has a favourite Disney movie on tape that they love to play over and over, there is actually a chance that they can wear out that copy. These copies can at least be replaced (for the most part, or at least with a brand new DVD), but home videos of precious memories like weddings or child birth cannot (all the more reason to have your home videos transfered to DVD!).
There are some ways that video tapes can be stored in order to ensure that they last much longer:
While somewhat time consuming, the best way to store a video tape is by playing it through (not fast forwarding it) to the end without rewinding them. This will ensure the tapes have the proper tension on the tape part by winding it correctly. Using the rewind or fast forward features before putting videos away will put more tension on the film tape, causing it to wear out faster.
Store your video tapes vertically, on their ends, and only handle the tapes with clean hands to keep them free of grease, dirt and other debris. Make sure that the video tapes are kept far away from any heat sources or electronics that can emit heat, like televisions, as well as out of the direct sun.
Pick up some Rubbermaid containers. These containers come in all shapes and sizes, and the size of your video collection and amount of storage space will determine what size is best for you. Storing video tapes in these air-tight, waterproof containers will protect them from dust and keep them cool and dry.
Finally, never leave your video tapes in the VCR when they are not in use.
